The Youth Service Bureau of St. Joseph County, Inc. is a 501(c) 3 organization. We began in 1972, and have been empowering youth and families ever since.
1972 - Humble Beginnings
The Youth Service Bureau began on July 20, 1972 with funding through the Federal Law Enforcement Assistance Administration with matching funds from the City of South Bend.
1976 - Safe Station Opens
Safe Station is still the ONLY runaway shelter for teens in St. Joseph County.
1978 - New Found Funding
St. Joseph County Government became a funding partner in recognition of the impact of our emergency shelter and street outreach efforts across the community.
1980 - Our New Home
We moved into 2222 Lincolnway West, which is where our Administrative Offices and Young Moms' Self-Sufficiency Program are still located today.
1985 - Transitional Planning Group
In January 1985, the City of South Bend made the decision that they could no longer provide human services directly, but they would still support them. YSB transitioned and became a private, non-profit corporation, with the help of a transitional planning group, who became our first Board of Directors.
1992 - New Additions
In the Spring of 1992, we purchased and renovated a house located at 1330 Lincolnway East. This is where our Street Outreach, Drop-In Center and Youth Development Services are all located.
We are celebrating more than 46 years! And offer an array of programs to help youth achieve the safety and stability they deserve.
